Our Sweet Story

How It All Began......... Maine Backwoods Maple Syrup officially started in 2015 but the roots of the business go back quite a few years. Jamie first started making his own syrup in 2011 after doing it several years as a youngster with members of his family. As he claims, once you start making sugar it is pretty hard to quit. Shane and Dustin came down with maple fever in 2013 and started helping Jamie on the tubing lines he installed in 2011. Shane is still an integral part of the operation and is eager to continue to expand. In 2023, our family lost Dustin which left a whole in the operation. We are continuing to honor his legacy through family and our operation.

The maple trees we tap are all located in Peru, Maine near our residences and in close proximity to Worthley Pond. We currently have a total of about of 550 taps. The sap we collect is boiled off in an oil fired drop flue evaporator. We retired the old wood fired evaporator that Jamie built himself a few years ago. The sap is collected in storage tanks and boiled off at rate of 45-55 gallons per hour. Our sap is filtered several times before making it to the evaporator and we filter the syrup through our 7" filter press, guaranteeing the clearest, best quality syrup possible. It takes approximately 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup.

The days seem short and the nights are long during the heart of the season. The timing of the annual sap run varies from year to year. We have seen sap run by mid-February and others years not until early April. The one thing you can count on is that the sap doesn't wait for you and it also doesn't care what you planned on!

Some people call this a hobby, while those close to us call it as an addiction. We can say that we truly do enjoy it, which is the #1 requirement to keep a venture like this moving forward. We just recently got the website up and running so check us out and place an order. We promise that this is good stuff and welcome you to the Maine Backwoods Syrup Family!
